Winter Walk Day 2023

Winter Walk Day (WWD) is an annual celebration of winter that is organized by Ontario Active School Travel.

This year, it is scheduled for Wednesday, February 1, 2023.

The program is targeted towards elementary school students in Kindergarten to Grade 6.

The goal is to have as many students as possible walk or wheel to school on February 1.

Schools can celebrate WWD with special events on February 1 and/or throughout the month of February. The program can be tailored to each school’s capacity, meaning they can do a lot or a little.

Schools can participate by promoting walking and wheeling to school on social media, in classrooms, or with messages to families. They can also organize winter-themed activities for students. Students should be reminded to dress appropriately for the weather.

Schools can choose to register here to report on their events, but this is not required.

Text Box: Parents…
Encourage parents to get involved by having them volunteering to supervise a group of children in their neighbourhood on their walk or wheel to and from school. The emphasis needs to be placed on ensuring the route taken is safe for everyone participating (sidewalks available and free of ice, crossing guards, etc.). Municipalities can help find the best route and offer support!

Many promotional resources are provided on their website for schools to use. We have linked a few favourites below:

  • Poster to hang in school hallways and classrooms (editable version available)
  • “I-Spy” outdoor activity for grades K-3 or 4-6
  • Word search classroom activity
  • Images for social media/newsletters: Image 1, Image 2, Image 3, Image 4

Schools can share their WWD stories and experiences on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram. Sample messages for social media are provided here. You can tag @OntarioAST and use these hashtags:

#WinterWalk2School

WWD is an awesome way to encourage students, parents, and staff to have fun, get outside, and promote physical and mental wellbeing. Grey Bruce Public Health will be promoting WWD on our social media platforms. We hope to see lots of local schools participate by helping students engage in active school travel this winter!
