Play Your Way, Every Day!

June is Recreation & Parks Month

June has the longest days of the year.
June signals the beginning of summer.
Junes IS Recreation and Parks Month!

This is the time of year where Parks and Recreation organizations across the country are celebrating!  This is the perfect opportunity to share the benefits of parks and recreation and encourage everyone to get out and be active in their communities.

We have all heard the reports on the importance of being active!  Not only does it help maintain a healthy lifestyle, it helps to build muscle, strengthen your immune system, reduce stress, and boost your self esteem. Recreation enhances overall quality of life and helps people to live happier and longer. Play brings families, neighbourhoods and communities together and can be done with limited equipment or skills.

  1. Farmer’s Markets – This is the time of year when markets are opening with fresh produce and goodies. Take the whole family for a stroll through the market and grab some healthy ingredients for tonight’s dinner.
  2. Hiking Trails – Now that things are starting to dry up and flowers are blooming, it is the perfect time to try out your local hiking trails. Check your municipal website for trail maps and starting points.
  3. Parks – As the days are getting longer, it makes it easy to go to the neighbourhood playground for some tag or monkey bar action after dinner. It’s a great way to burn that end of the energy before the kids head off to bed.
  4. Swimming – The lake may still be a bit chilly but the outdoor pools and splash pads are starting to open their doors for the summer. Ask your municipality for your summer pool schedule.
  5. Canoeing/kayaking – A great way to see hidden areas of your community.  Rent a boat, grab a lifejacket, and explore!  Use the link below to find Saugeen Valley Conservation Area’s Canoe and Kayak Routes of Bruce and Grey counties.
